James Cochran a.k.a. JIMMY C
You have seen his walls in London, Paris, Berlin or Sao Paulo. Australian artist James Cochran, a.k.a Jimmy C is the master of pointillism with spraycan, the Seurat of urban art. He paints real people from the streets, often homeless, and gives them the recognition they don’t have. But there is nothing dark in his art. On the contrary, the multiple layers of coloured drips he applies on his works always create an enchanting impression.
When I visited him, Jimmy C was working in his London home-studio on a commissioned piece inspired by Cate Blanchett in Shekhar Kapur’s movie Elizabeth.
Jimmy C’s environment is somewhat monastic: walls are blank except for a crochet painting made by his late mother, his clothes are in a range going from blue to grey, and all canvasses are turned back: he needs this plain environment to create pieces which burst with passion and colours.
